Regardless of the material, placing hot pans directly on a worktop is not recommended.

4. Water and Moisture Resistance

Quartz has very low water absorption, while properly sealed granite and marble can provide good resistance to moisture.

Laminate’s surface is generally water resistant when undamaged. However, water can enter around poorly sealed sink cut-outs, joints and exposed edges. This may cause the core material to swell.

Correct fabrication and sealing around sinks and taps are important for both materials, especially in utility rooms and bathrooms.

5. Stain Resistance

Quartz provides excellent resistance to many common stains because it is non-porous.

Granite’s stain resistance depends on the particular stone and whether it has been appropriately sealed. Marble requires more care because cosmetics, oils, wine and acidic substances can mark or etch its surface.

Laminate usually resists ordinary spills when its protective surface is intact. However, damaged areas, exposed joints and scratches can become more difficult to clean and may allow moisture to enter.

Spills should be removed promptly from every worktop material.

6. Cleaning and Maintenance

Laminate is easy to clean using a soft cloth and an appropriate everyday cleaner. It does not require sealing.

Quartz is similarly straightforward to maintain and does not normally require sealing. Warm water and mild detergent are usually sufficient.

Some granite and marble varieties require periodic sealing. The required frequency depends on the stone, sealant and amount of use rather than a universal timetable.

8. Joints and Finished Edges

Laminate worktops often use visible jointing systems, edging strips and sealed cut edges. These can perform well when installed correctly but may become vulnerable if water enters damaged areas.

Stone joints can be carefully colour-matched and positioned, although they may still be visible. Worktop dimensions, slab sizes, vein patterns and access limitations determine where joints are required.
