2. Appearance and Pattern Variation

Granite contains natural mineral patterns, speckles and colour variations. Even slabs from the same granite variety can look noticeably different.

This variation is part of granite’s appeal, but it makes viewing the complete slab important before fabrication. The positions of joints, sink cut-outs and islands should be planned around the stone’s natural pattern.

Quartz generally provides greater consistency between samples and slabs. It is available in designs that reproduce the appearance of marble, concrete and other natural materials.

Some quartz products also feature large-scale veining, so careful slab planning may still be needed for splashbacks, waterfall ends and bookmatched installations.

3. Durability

Both granite and quartz are suitable for everyday kitchen use when correctly fabricated and installed.

Quartz provides strong resistance to scratches, stains and ordinary impacts. However, it is not completely scratch-proof or chip-proof. Cutting directly on the surface or striking exposed edges can cause damage.

Granite is also extremely hard and durable. Because it is a natural material, its characteristics can vary between different granite types. Weak points around cut-outs and unsupported edges must be fabricated and installed carefully.

Regardless of the material, use chopping boards and take care around sink edges, hob cut-outs and worktop joints.

4. Stain and Moisture Resistance

Quartz has very low liquid absorption and does not normally require sealing. This gives it excellent resistance to many common kitchen spills.

Granite is naturally porous to varying degrees. Some dense varieties absorb very little liquid, while others benefit from periodic sealing to protect against moisture and staining.

Spills should be wiped away promptly from both materials, particularly oils, wine, coffee, turmeric and strongly coloured sauces.

If straightforward maintenance and stain resistance are your main priorities, quartz generally has the advantage.

5. Heat Resistance

Granite has excellent natural heat resistance. Nevertheless, placing extremely hot cookware directly on any worktop is not advisable because rapid temperature changes can affect the stone, joints or protective seal.

Quartz also provides good resistance to normal kitchen temperatures, but excessive heat can damage or discolour the binders within the surface.

Always use a suitable trivet underneath hot pans, oven trays, air fryers and other heat-producing appliances. This simple precaution will help protect both quartz and granite worktops.

6. Cleaning and Maintenance

Quartz is easy to maintain and does not normally need sealing. Clean it using warm water, mild detergent and a soft cloth.

Granite can be cleaned in the same way, but certain varieties may require resealing. The frequency depends on the stone, sealant and amount of use, so follow the advice provided by your fabricator rather than relying on a fixed schedule.

Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals and highly acidic or alkaline cleaning products on both surfaces. These products can affect the finish, protective seal or resin.

Quartz and granite are available at a wide range of prices. Neither material is always cheaper than the other.

The cost of quartz depends on the manufacturer, collection, design and slab dimensions. Premium marble-effect quartz with large or carefully matched veins can cost more than simpler colours.

Granite prices depend on availability, origin, pattern and rarity. Common granite varieties can provide good value, while rare or exotic slabs may be considerably more expensive.
